A while ago, for participating in a survey on BlogHer, the people at Creativity For Kids sent me this Create Your Own Pop Up Book Kit. I've been working with Little Bear on making some of her own books this week, so yesterday we tried out the Pop Up Book Kit!
The kit comes with two blank hardcover books (one big and one small), some markers, two sheets of stickers, the paper pieces necessary to make things "pop up" in your book, and the instructions on how to do it. The directions said that all of the pop-up pieces were self-adhesive, so no glue or scissors would be necessary unless you wanted to make additional pieces on your own. However, I found that the adhesive stuff was all dried up, and wouldn't stick at all, so I did end up using my own glue. Other than that, the project was a total success!
Little Bear started working on it while Pufferfish was still sleeping. With just a little bit of guidance from me, Little Bear was able to work independently on her book and make all of the pop-up things herself. Meanwhile, I worked on the smaller book, inserting my own pop-ups. Later, when Pufferfish woke up, I helped her choose and stick on stickers on all of the different pages, and let her color on the pages with the markers. So, although the kit is perfect for kids over the age of five, it can be adapted for younger kids too. Pufferfish is only seventeen months old, and she definitely enjoyed it and got something from it!
Here are some pictures of the girls and their masterpieces.
Little Bear's favorite part was the "secret message' piece, which was a small envelope that could be glued onto a page. She put a little card, on which she wrote "I <3 Mom", inside the envelope.
Pufferfish's book turned into sort of a word book. She picked the stickers she liked, and now when she pages through the book she can name most of the pictures!
I really love this type of product that helps kids to be creative and have fun. I heard that the company is going to have a product review panel starting in 2009, so I'm hoping I'll have the chance to review more of their products soon!
